Dude, you come around a corner or over the crest of a hill at night and run into a deer that just jumped out into the road, wounding him with the car. Having a pistol with you allows you to put the animal out of its misery in a humane way.

There are many reasons why there is a good reason to have a weapon with you when you are out driving around.
