Nothing is wrong with the 915. Like the car for which it is intended, there is an involved learning curve. Don't shift too fast, and don't think it is somehow intuitive to your driving style. It has to be used purposefully and with some thought.
With my 915, after all proper maintenance has been performed on the box short of a rebuild, it shifts perfectly given the fact it is a 30+ year old gearbox.
The only modifications I have made is a factory short shifter which is a worthy investment, new shift coupler bushings, and what I feel is the single most telling modification - solid motor mounts, which dramatically speed up the reaction of the 915 when the next gear is selected, or previous gear is down shifted to. The solid motor mounts also make the shifts more accurate, as it appears they more properly align the engine/transmission assembly.
Also, I have found that shifting above 4,000 RPMs whenever possible makes the 915 very smooth.
