Interestingly enough, last month's tech session here on Vancouver island centered on the 915 gearbox, and its design.
the BIGGEST difference between it and the g50 (and other modern transmission) is the syncros. The 915 uses a Porsche syncro, whereas modern gearboxes use Borg/warner if i remember correctly, which is a cone style syncro-mesh, and is not mechanically perfect, and it is defeat-able. Whereas the Porsche sycnro mesh is not defeat-able.
- I learned to drive stick on my 915 (which i had just finsihed rebuilding) and i really enjoy driving it, however i must say, that it went from too long of throw (stock), to very notchy (wm short shift +), to very smooth and great fun to operate (wevo). It really changed alot IMO. Still have to be gentle putting it in first, however everything else is way smoother and more natural of feeling IMO.
- Wayne Ayers is our local tech expert, Great guy, has a really neat 911 himself. To highlight his views I'll point out that he didn't do a 3.6L transplant in the belief that the block etc. are too much weight, and at the wrong spot. He has a very safe + rev loving 2.7L (yes, cis) in a sub 1900lb car. Looked very deeply into a 3.6 + g50 conversion however figured a custom low boost turbo on his 2.7 could yield similar hp with way less weight. anyways the point of the story is that driving with him, whether it be in his own 911 (77 ~spyder~) my car (75 outlaw) or even a stock 930, I have seen just how nicely the Porsche sycnro meshed gearboxes can be shifter. His consideration for the g50 had nothing to do with feel, he was only considering the torque handling abilities.....
915 is not an easy tranny to drive, but it wasn't designed to be, it is what it was designed to be, which is a road-race ready gearbox that delivers enjoyment.
