Actually the main batle rifle in US military service in the Spanish American War was the venerable old 45/70 Trapdoor. Thats why the 1500 Spainards were able to hold off 13000 or so US Troops at San Juan Hill for so long. The Spainards were using the Mauser which fired a smokless powder round.vs a then oboslete Blackpowder cartridge. That is why the US eventually adopted a copy of the Mauser action in the 1903 Springfield which fired the still viable today 30/06.
