Now we are engaged in a great documentation, testing whether that road or any road so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We have met on the great shoulder of that road. We have come to dedicate a portion of that road as a resting-place for those who came out of the woodwork so that Mulholland Drive might live on. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we must dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave drivers, living or not who struggled here have consecrated it far above the LAPD’s power to deter. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what we did up there.
It is for us the living to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who hauled ass here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these time honored memories we take increased devotion to the cause for which we came the last full measure of dedication--that we here highly resolve that we have not driven in vain, that this road under starlight shall have a new birth of freedom, and that road of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
