Think hard about that, Chris. A poor family who simply, at this time, cannot possibly afford health insurance. A child gets gravely ill. The father watches his four year-old son die because he cannot afford the medical cost of saving his life. There is a reason, Chris, why society elects to provide basic medical services to everyone.
Of course, you'll probably come back with some remark about how basic services make some sense. That children should not die for want of an antibiotic prescription. If you do, that's different from Option 1 above and in this case, you're paying for those services. Paying through the NOSE. A typical emergency room service runs probably $1,000. More, maybe.
Some of you guys are not going to understand this, but universal health care is something you WILL pay for. It's just a question of how it's structured. Making people achieve financial security as a condition of accessing health care sounds like a cute idea......as long as you don't think about it very hard.
