How about an 05 Passat TDI wagon? Wife has one, and we get 40mpg on the road every weekend that we take it to the cabin (over 2 mountain passes) with 2 kids and a loaded Thule on top.
The torque on the engine that's in the Passat is a lot higher than what's in the Jetta or Golf... Mom has the Golf TDI auto and its anemic by comparison. Passat has also been absolutely bulletproof with 46K miles on it so far.
