Many homebuilts have been based on VW and Type 4 engines. There is a huge difference between the simple 4 cylinder pushrod engine and the DOHC 6 cylinder engines. No comparison in complexity or maintenance.

42 according to the Mooney registry. Introduced at $193k, the same airplane with a Lycoming engine sold for $177k. Hell of a premium for Porsche power.
