I had SF for almost 25 years. Had one car stolen, and my wife's car was totaled when she was hit on the freeway by a pickup that kept on going. They did a great job on the settlements.
I had auto, home, and apartments insured by them. However I changed to Ameriprize (American Express) through Costco for the car insurance. SF kept raising my premiums yearly until I was paying $2K per year with good driving records, no at fault accidents, and a senior discount for me. I'm back down to $1,200 yearly with the same coverage. Can't comment on the Ameriprize service since I haven't made any claims. I thought SF was raising my rates because they were putting the burden of their payouts for hurricanes, fires, investment losses during 2001, etc. on their rate payers.
Currently they won't even insure homes in the foothills & mountains to the east of here where I'm building my new home because of exposure to fire danger. I had to buy course of contruction and liability insurance from Farmers.
