I made that drive a couple of years ago. Cedar City is a cool place, just a ways north of St. George. You might want to go all the way to provo but that's almost SLC.
BTY on the way back I drove straight through from Old faithful inn to Orange, Ca is 16 1/2 hours.
Didn't get that good of gas mileage tho
