Joe; doesn't your understanding of "Palestine" and "Palestinian controlled areas" seem to ignore the total West Bank?
I'm wondering if Hamas has over-played their hand. Given that they have always been stronger in Gaza -- the poorer, and more crowded part of the Palestinian Territories, have they just opted out of a united Palestinian Territories? If Abbas now holds an election on the West Bank and excludes Gaza, will Hamas still be as strong given that their power base is in Gaza? Will the result be a "moderate" Fatah government on the West Bank, and a radical Hamas government in Gaza -- essentially two different Palestinian territories. What then? Compared to the West Bank, Gaza has no economy, just a lot of people.
Put a wall up around Gaza, and make peace with the West Bank. Start to open up the economic opportunities and negotiate with the West Bank, and let them become part of the modern world as long as they continue down the moderate path.
