Jeff,
Are you using the Tivo desktop? I have mine configured to auto-copy programs from the Tivo to the computer over my network at home when I am traveling. That way I do not lose programs that are over-written but it sure takes a lot of hard drive space.
Buying a couple of those would go a long way and $240 or so is not a lot of money for a terrabite of storage.
