Well, T-Mobile solved this issue by removing the Edge/GPRS only data plan ($20/month) and replaced it with a Wifi/Edge/GPRS plan for $30/month. This is half of what Cingular charges for unlimited data only on the GPRS/EDGE network.
T-mobile is also planning on rolling out a new cell phone/VOIP phone which will connect to wifi networks when in range.
