State rights is the argument, slavery was certainly one issue. Slavery was indefensible and morally repugnant. Nonetheless, it was a question of whether secession was allowed under the Constitution which it was, but it was not honored by Washington.
Case in point, If the Federal Government granted secession but then went to war to free all the salves that would be a different matter altogether. They would by act of war dissolve a morally repugnant economic system, yet they would honor the constitution by allowing secession.
