For me it does not mean a thing associated with slaves or slavery, but as Keith says above a "screw you" attitude towards "the establishment" so to speak. BTW I had relatives fighting on both sides of the Civil War.

I don't see this at all. The south were not anti-establishment. They were well within their constitutional rights to [secede] Edit succeed from the Union. The CSA had there own president Jefferson Davis and cabinet, the CSA had it's own Capitol, Richmond Virginia. They printed confederate money. They had there own establishment.
