All phones are expensive if you do the math. My 8525 (an HTC phone) wasn't much less than the iPhone, and I pay $60/mo for unlimited data. I don't use it as a phone, but can as it is one of the phones on my family plan. If you figure that over a couple of years, viola...a bunch of money.
It's always funny when pundits want to bash something so they do some math and say, "omg, look how expensive this really is!" When in reality, there isn't a huge difference. Is it more expensive? Yes. Will v2 and v3 be better than v1? If not, then something is seriously wrong.
Some people like to be early adopters. Some people like to be cool. Others like to mess around with the latest and greatest and it has little to do with being cool...just that's their thing. I know guys who don't spend a dime wrenching on their cars, but have almost every smartphone made in the last 3 years. Everybody's got to have a hobby...
