First question, do you have a pop-off valve in the airbox? If so, the backfire could be blowing it open, and it's not reseating properly--resulting in dying engine and no start. The backfire could be from many things, including valve adjustment, fuel mixture, etc. By the way, if you don't have the pop-off valve, get one soon.
