In this country, it absolutely is a function of social class. BTW: where do you live other than "out there"? I ask because "out here" the only vegans I see are uptight elitists in Whole Foods market or Trader Joe's that look all the part of refugees from Auschwitz.

Secondly, here in L.A., vegans usually comprise upper middle class Caucasians, pretty much split between male/female, and, as I have seen, never any other ethnicity. Lastly, someone once told me the fastest way to piss off a day laborer who physically works and burns calories in something more than a jaunt on the treadmill, is to give him a salad for lunch. He wants his gut filled, and preferably with beef. But a vegan would need to intermix with a working class day laborer to figure that fact out, though I just don't think they have the...er...stomach to convince a hungry day laborer about the values of being a vegetarian.

So there is your second challenge in defense of your vegan diet: prove to me in this country that it is not a phenomenon based mostly on elitism, race and for the hell of it, trend. Obviously you haven't yet found me a bicycle racer who while relying on lightness and strength for his sport, also maintains a non-animal diet.
