Update:
Ya know...the dialogue forced here made me think of a better solution. I'll run the separated ( male/female) connectors to a normal rocker switch that I'll install in the fiberboard "backwall" of the trunk. Then it will be like the classic panel-mounted switches suggested here earlier afterall....
