Thanks Everyone, much appreciated. Robert, I am using Photoshop with a Mac, so don't have paint, but thank you for the description, looks good. Scott, that's pretty much it, thank you. The mask is what I need more than anything. I also did a quick test playing with inverting, brightness and contrast to come up with nice black outlines and "dirty scuffs", then knocked out the white. Not sure what I'm going to do for final and it's context in the design.
With teh server down, went ahead and started on another. Still need to get the swords in the same design as the headstone or take them out entirely. not sure. it's a whole shirt image.
