I recently got a Thule rack. Since I only had a day to get it ready, I slapped a piece of exterior plywood and some steel supports on it, and it holds three wheels/tires without a problem. It's actually rated for the weight of four, but I'm not going to push things.
The way it holds the rain gutter is really well designed. I worried about my paint before mounting it, but don't now.
