I used to like Phoenix before it became a suburb of L.A. before it became what it is today - a refuge for all L.A.'s white, middle-class people that have been driven out. 15 years ago it was amazing - you could have bought a nice single-family home in Tempe for about $80k. Now it's well over $300k - and it's a less liveable place with all the overcrowding, etc.
If I ever decide I've had enough of Southern California because of similar problems (too many people, too overpriced, etc.) I probably wouldn't consider Phoenix unless it changes considerably. Possibly Flagstaff or Tucson, but not Phoenix.
