Slak, if your friend is serious (and you are about helping him), you should make him read up on the horror stories many cross-cultural, overseas courtships become even before marriage, let alone the bureaucratic nightmare of getting a bride to the US on a fiance visa. The wait is more than a year, even from civilized places like Japan. He's much better off finding an Asian lady here, who doesn't need a Green Card, knows our way of life, is employed or immediately employable, etc. My own fiance is from China, came here on a student visa (literally won a lotto to get that), converted it to an H1 when she got a good job after she graduated, which she's had for a year and a half, is about to marry me and we're still looking at a nightmare for immigration stuff right after the wedding. My own experience with my Japanese friends, the ones who just work here, but have no interest in staying here permanently, is that they are the nicest people in the world, but just impossible to ever get to really know. The language and culture is so opposite ours. I can't imagine a serious relationship with a Japanese woman who's never lived in the US is gonna be easy. Having been to China a few times and being about as familiar with that culture as an American can be, there are still huge cultural and language issues to overcome.
