It doesn't ground the coil but cuts the power to all the plug wires until the rpms come back down. I think there is another system that is supposed to cut fuel to stop over revving, but I would rather have the rpm limiting rotor than a possible lean fuel situation at high rpm.
That's one good thing about the MSD 6AL I use. It has a Soft Touch Rev Control that alternates what cylinders get cut off so they don't load up.
