Need more info to make a diagnosis. What kind of "funny smell", like electrical or ...?
Was the unit blowing cold air? Was the unit blowing cold air after you turned the other knob?
Could the light smoke be moisture condensing? You can see that on really humid days when cold air comes in contact with warm humid air (like when you open your freezer door)?
