I grew up on my dad's Commander. I helped my mom pick it out for him for a Xmas present when I was six yrs. old. That's about all I ever shot for autos until college, when I discovered SIG Sauer. Two TOTALLY different animals. And which is better for you depends on what you'll use it for. Right out of the box, I'd say a SIG is far superior. I mean, does anyone still own a Series 70 Commander that hasn't had all kinds of stuff done to it? Ramp polished? Custom sights? Rubber grips? Custom trigger? Honestly, I SIG shoots dead accurate as soon as you get home from the gun store. A Series 70 Commander only cost around $150 new back in the day, but you know you have 3x that amount into it over the years and most of that was necessary. I bought my P220 new about 12 yrs. ago for $640ish. Since then I'm on my second set of tritium sights, added rubber grips, solid guide rod, all new springs and had Robar refinish it in two-tone. So I have $1000 into it. I bought a Series 70 Commander just like my dad's a few mos. before I got the P220. Commander ran me around $450, but was bone stock. Which do you think cost me more money in the end? Yes, the Commander and still never shot as straight as my SIG. P220 is a little thicker in the grips, has a bit more of a trigger pull (unless you have that fixed) and the decocker and double-action features are just night and day from the cocked and locked style of 1911's.
