Grand Cherokee dying off throtle. Diagnose ?
Jeep Grand Cherokee '96. V8. 110k miles.
Lately it has started a bad habit of dying when I come off the throttle at low speed, say taxing up to a stop light. I can usually start it right up and continue. Never happens when I am on the throttle at speed. Only when I let go coming up to a stop.
It starts up fine, with a nice and even idle. Drives well. I have noticed that it tend to happen mostly before the engine is completely warmed up and particularly if I have not driven it for several days or only for short unhealthy trips the last days. After longer trips (20-30 miles) it does not happen, although the idle is still lower than it used to be.
Someone told me it could be the 'idle engine' that needs cleaning out. I did that but it did not help. Another tip said that the V8 is very sensitive to batteries going bad, that the current to the 'idle engine' is not strong enough. I have no problem starting the engine from cold so I thought my battery is still good, but maybe I am wrong.
The car is otherwise serviced and maintained as scheduled and generally problem free.
What do you guys think? Any help much appreciated as usual!
