I'm no automotive design expert, but I truly believe Porsche knew that they lost something when they went away from the upright headlight style. The new 997 with it's gorgeous curves and new headlight profile is pure drool.
I think, had they opted to stay with the Boxster/996 headlight style, the model would have fizzled. One day, when I can afford me a 997, I'm all over it.
