There were rumors for a while of a mid-engine, air-cooled small roadster - almost like a modern slant on the 914, with a price between $30k-$40k. I was really hoping that rumor would prove to be true.

I don't like it either, but I respect Porsche for understanding that they have to do what they need to in order to survive. The enthusiast market isn't enough to sustain a high-end sports car company. They've been down that road several times. Everytime I see a Cayenne I sort of shake my head and groan, but I realize it's the money pumped into Porsche's coffers by the yuppie poseur owners of those b*astardized vehicles that keeps the company solvent and funds their racing programs. So it serves a purpose. Yes, you can call that "whoring out" or "selling out the marquee", but ultimately do the ends justify the means? In this case, I would say probably.
