I'm not sure the "tach bouncing" thing is necessarily an indicator; my tach doesn't register when cranking and my car runs fine.

Incidentally, one thing I've noticed is that no matter how well tuned the engine is, when starting the car the engine always cranks for a second of two before the engine fires up. I assume that this is intentional to help the engine build oil pressure before it goes under load?
