Depends on the round.
I always prefer to shoot handloads in the smaller competition rifles: .270, .223, 8mm. It usually costs me about $.16 - $.18 to reload those. (buying supplies in bulk mind you)
I'll usually buy 1000-2000 slugs at a time, A: for the price brake, B: so I always have them on hand. And regularly use surplus powder (But always use CCI primers)

When it come to rounds I can reload with lead: .45, 45-70, 9mm the price drops even more as I often help on "clean up days" at our local range. It's nothing to head home with nearly 60 lbs of lead to be cleaned, melted, and re-cast.

The rounds that really pay off are the Specialty rounds: 7.62x54R, .50AE, etc..
It's nearly impossible to find good 7.62x54R ammo that doesn't have corrosive primers and/or steel slugs. And when you do find it, it's a little costly. Then of course there is the wonderful .50AE rounds for the Desert Eagle. Well, let's just say if you don't reload that caliber yourself, your going to start selling other guns just to be able to afford shooting it!

I usually judge the ammo market off the .270 prices (fairly middle of the road). Last time I was at the store they were almost $1.35 per round. What would cost $27.00 at a store costs about $4.00 to reload.

Keep in mind the initial investment to reload isn't cheep. But it can be done afford-ably, and in the long run will save TONS of money. Figure I probably go through an average of 500 handgun rounds per month, and have for the last several years. Store price on a 50 round box of 9mm about $12.00. Reload price for 50 rounds less than half that! I save myself in the neighborhood of $700-$800 a year on handgun ammo alone. It is definitely worth that!
