You are correct, I used the incorrect term. He went to sea, he spent pretty much his entire adult life working for the NMU, and went back to sea at age 60. I can dig out his sea papers. Those who know me, know that I don't have top BS. I guess since I loaded & unloaded ships while in college that makes me a long shoreman, and the union did try to get me to quit school & stay on.
