In the oil drain plug, it depends on how big your "shavings" are.

You should have extremely fine metal particals sticking to the magnet. They are so fine they form a cream with the oil. You should not be able to discern individual particals.

If you can see individual particals, something is wrong.

My '86 also shifts smoother after the trans has warmed up. And I use Swepco. I think this is common and not a problem.
