Would it not be prudent to elect a candidate with a fair chance of not dying of old age during his term ?
Pretty much like the election of the Pope. They all seem to have surpassed their 'best-before' date.
Maybe from a Darwinist's view point it is a a good community strategy. Most leaders will turn out to be a liability of some form. Electing the 'near dead' will diminish their chances of doing too much damage.
I am mostly joking, of course..
