Have a A/C shop put a vacuum on your system to see if it's tight. Assume you're still R12? Or was it converted? If it's tight, you could get a rebuilt compressor. (ebay?) for a couple hundred. Get leaks fixed if you have them, often it's just o-rings.
My '79 with a charge of R12 is very cold.
If this works, you're WAY under $1500.
