In martial arts class we have sparred. But in real life I've either talked my way out, been on guard (never been sucker punched) and blocked/deflected, or walked away. Even if it made me "look bad". One of my sifus gave me advice I follow to this day. First, avoid the situation. If you can't do that, talk your way out. If you can't do that, walk away. If they chase you, run. If all else fails, then you likely are fighting for your life, so end it. No "fair fight" crap. You gouge their eyes, elbow the temple, etc (San Soo is a nasty style). Fighting is not a game.
