Best and most reliable GPS Sat Nav on the market

Apologies in advance if this has been posted recently on here, but I currently have a 3-yr old Magellan RoadMate GPS Sat/nav system that not only is incredibly unreliable, but is quite big as well. I've not had good luck much with it at all, and due to my frequency of getting lost (don't ask) have decided I'd like to get a new one, possibly a Garmin. What's the best and most reliable sat/nav unit out there that's a plug-and-play kind?

What brand(s) do you all use, and how have you liked/disliked them? I'm looking for something small that I can put in my Cherokee.

Thanks guys!
