I asked my grandmother why. She said that there was a funeral procession passing by on the other side of the highway. I said, "so what? it's a divided highway, they are way other there going the opposite direction, what does that have to do with this side of the highway?"
She said, "we do things like that out of respect".
Wow. Kinda floored me. The thought of pulling off to the shoulder of a highway as an act of respect would have never occured to me in a million years.
At the time I thought it was silly. Most californians would agree with me. As I get older I'm not so sure.
