This is a topic that has bugged me for a long time. There are a ton of gays, jews, christians, moslems, whites, blacks, browns, asians, etc. etc. etc. in the military. But here is the deal, why should anyone have the right to get up and express their preference for anything and what the heck is their motivation? Well I offer that it is for selfish reasons and not for the good of the unit or the success of the mission. I have seen a ton of folks pull together when the chips are down, it is amazing! These same folks may not be best friends during the regular day but they respect each other.
I know I am going to take heck for the following from my Christian brothers and sisters but if an evangelical sailor were to stand up in the barracks bay and start preaching as compared to anyone else doing the same thing, well I would not condone it and put an end to it immediatly. That does not preclude sailors from communicating one on one or in small groups, no matter what the topic (well mutiny would not be good) but that is their right, they have a choice. I may not like their choice or it may not be my cup of tea, but it is their choice, period.
Itimate relationships are private matters. Don't ask don't tell confirms that, once it is forced into the public, on others, it is another matter.
Anyway, that is my 2 cents. Service with honor is something all humans do all the time.
