That is a VW beetle "Hurst" style shifter (with an adapter plate), VW shift rod head, and VW shift rod bushing bracket!
Although it is a strange setup, it should not change the shift pattern.
I notice there is no bushing around the shift rod. What could be happening is that the rod is so loose that it is following the lateral motion of the shifter rather than rotating in the opposite direction.
To change to a 911 shifter, you will also have to replace your shift rod with a proper 911 unit, which means removing the engine and transmission.
