+2 on that. Loctite(Permatex) actually came out with a new hydraulic fitting type sealant that's purple and it works the nuts at sealing even the worst pipe thread type seals as well. I can't remember the actual manf number(ie 252, 272, etc) but I know it's a purple goo, like grape jelly. Stuff is supposed to work well on fittings that are not perfectly clean either, but I've never tried that myself.
