They are not nearly as reliable as guns. You get one shot. Miss and you're out. Not so with a gun. When cops feel safe enough to only carry tasers and leave their guns behind, I might feel safer with one.
AFAIK, a CCW permit does not allow someone to carry a taser. If you are justified in even drawing your sidearm, you are justified in killing the threat. The other side of that is, if you don't fear your life is in imminent danger, the sidearm stays holstered. Neutralizing the threat for a few seconds or minutes with a taser does not stop the threat. Guns do a far better job here. Plus, cops only use tasers to immobilze someone long enough to get them into cuffs. Ever see cops taser an armed man? Nope. He gets the gun treatment.
Also agree with Red Beard. CCW's are not deterrents. They are for defending oneself. They can have a deterrent effect. Ever think you'll see someone try to shoot up the NRA national headquarters? Nuts who do this kind of stuff only ever do so in places where they know no one will be able to stop them. Then again, there was one such nut who shot up a police station here last year. He was killed pretty quickly, but not before he killed two cops.
