It's kinda like saying a football player only gets paid for the time he's on the field. There's a lot more in it than that.

Okay, teachers don't work 9 months a year, they work 10(not counting all the half days, holidays at all) Perhaps your memory is slightly inaccurate. I know a fair number of teachers, and they are not working all summer, aside from at a second job.
