That sucks man. I too have been pulled out of line more then once to be searched. I don't really mind. They are doing their job. I would be pissed if they broke my stuff though. All of my baggage got searched the last time I went to Maui but it was all packed back with "almost" as much care as I had packed it in the first place. You probably just got one of the TSA people that had had a really bad day. Bottom line, I hope you reported the damage to the airline or whom ever might listen.
On another note; If you decide that you want to try and catch an earlier flight then the one that you are booked on, you are automatically flagged for a more thorough search. Ask me how I know....
