If you had slugish performance even while stock, it's even more important to check ignition timing. Your distributor might have been installed one hack south or timing markings might have been altered.
As I said before, it's imperative to find out TDC and bring it into sync with software, even by means of pulling a plug and sticking in a dial gauge.
