The Marlins have a similar strategy with a devious twist: they also draft well and trade big salaries (Beckett/Lowell) in order to get promising youngsters (Hanley/Anibal) and, like the Red Sox, Indians, Angels, et al., are willing to fill the holes with experienced veterans (IRod). Instead of having the constant turnover of the A's, however, the Marlins simply blow it all up every couple years, selling the farm after every championship and starting anew. Sounds like a stupid idea, but it's worked a couple times already for them.
