Tmtcguer:
Briefly,
car stalled after 'warming up'.
checked pretty much whole engine electrical harness componenets of DME and swapped DME, replaced coil, Head temp sensor, rotor and Dist cap. The Car continued to die, exhausted mentally and work sufferring had it towed to local wrench who replaced the 'now new' rotor and did not look further!!!!!
Big mistake, then he found a loose vacum tube and followed down a path of bad injector, then worn exhaust valve ending up by informing me I needed a head rebuild! .
With that I collected the car and descided to remove the distributor to see 'how' it could destroy a rotor and by now, another dist. cap!.
'Bingo'.
You guys I.D.'d the distributor with excessive 'end float' and even reccomended a source for a new one ($100).(this over a course of nearly 2 months!)
Result:
Car runs fine
PS Roger911s- thanks for the background, Blair did some good bodywork for me (battery tray rust) but I fear the electronics and DME stuff is beyond him. When I picked the car up from him the last time, my marine engineer came with me and when he asked Blair technical questions he 'faltered and fumbled!'. Confirmation that removing the car was the right descision.
I guess we live and learn!.
If you can reccomend any other mechanics in the long Island area I would appreciate it and if you are ever in the Sag Hbr/Hamptons area maybe we can meet for a beer?
either way, thanks for the insight!
Rgds Ben

Oh and no, that is not my boat in the background, on the grounds of anonymity I decided not to include the boat, but it is a 95' motor yacht flagged out of the Cayman Islands (approx value $4-5 million)
(I am the Captain- not the owner )
