Actually focused outside the cockpit so one could see things flying and would focus on the radalt.

There are valid requirements in the relatively low threat environment and the actual USMC defined CAS arena. I do not count the battle field interdiction (as the USAF does) as CAS.

Use to scare the helos and get complaints with Marine Herks and Hornets flying below them. Only the SOAR didn’t complain, they just commented that proved they weren’t low enough. The Dogfaces actually have some good folks.

Ever seen a Cobra flak trap? Basically some Cobras hang-out along a path that the other guy is likely (enticed) to come down. Cobra pops up and simulates 2.75s, etc. w/flares. The de-briefs are lots of fun, especially the Eagle bubbas as they rarely look out for helos as a threat.

Iraq now is different. Going LL in Irag in a jet...live the dream.

I went through MAWTS in the late 80's and was bounced once in my SH-60 by a Harrier...I spent the rest of the course looking for revenge. Live and learn.

I also never lost a 1 v 1 with a Hornet in the hills.
