There is a very interesting book in print titled "guns, germs and steel" that provides an very interesting story about the development of humanity from the earliest days until now by comparing the peoples of the different continents and how they evolved. It explains how we (some of us at least) changed from hunter-gatherers to farmers, and the importance of animal domestication in that evolution.
It shows how, five hundred years ago, the people of the middle east were much more technilogically advanced then we, the WASPs, were and how we overtook the technilogical lead. Very interesting book. The world is constantly changing, but whether for good or bad, is not for us to know. Maybe our grandchildrens grandchildren will know. Maybe not.
