If I didn't have kids (and their friends) around all the time, I would have a few shotguns secreted in various spots around the house. While the odds of a home invasion are very, very low - something like winning the lottery - the downside of being prepared in this manner are low.
With kids, the math is different. The downside now includes children finding the guns and accidentally shooting selves or others. So now the guns have to be locked up - but a loaded pistol lives in my bedside gunsafe with a combination keypad.
